Anansi the Spider by Gerald McDermott is one my all time favorites to read aloud, to perform, and to use during teacher training.  A great folktale, bold captivating illustrations, and a compelling story make this tale from Ashanti a sure fire hit in any classroom.  After reading, try making spider masks in the style of the story illustrations and perform a retelling.
